Pharma Active Biotech Products, SLU have launched their new product, KWD+ an extract sourced from the Kiwi fruit, which according to trials and studies boosts protein digestion. This extract, according to studies, helps people, who consume excessive protein and also those consuming inadequate and protein sourced from plants, especially in the case of Vegans.
The question is does India Inc have an answer to this Kiwi extract, after all, given the variety and range of fruits and vegetables produced in different agro-climatic zones of the country, can’t we repeat such a parallel feat and develop a product, which is uniquely India.
According to experts, India is home to Amla and multiple varieties of Citrus fruits and Moringa, all of which are rich in Vitamin C and contain similar properties. However, they pointed that R&D is the key to throw up more promising data.
According to Dr Anand Swaroop, “ India’s entire traditional medicinal knowledge is based on the principle of balance, Even the traditional Indian diet was about balance. However, to develop such exclusive extract-Isolates, we need to invest in modern methods of research. The impetus for this has to come from both industry as well as the Government, given the fact that the Government does invest a lot in research.”
Dr Swaroop further added that for information, one need not look too far as it was already available in our traditional knowledge base. On the role of start-ups providing an eco-system for research and development, Dr Swaroop said, “ I believe that we need to develop a multi-tier R and D ecosystem for product development, it cannot work otherwise.”
Amit Srivastava of Nutrify Today said, “ There has to be a convergence between pharma, traditional knowledge bases and forms, start-ups and major industry players, along with the academia and the Government apparatus. The Indian Nutraceutical task force has made it it’s main mission to create and cohesive and competent R and D ecosystem in India.”
The experts believe that while the potential for quality R and D was there, it needs to be made more cohesive and coordinated. “ After all what is the point in high quality research, if it doea not result in a saleable product?” Srivastava asked.
